about
Days Like This
I would have liked to do more solo acoustic songs for this album, as I feel the simplicity and intimacy of it is so very valuable; like the heart of the song is being worn on the sleeve. This tune really honors my roots as a singer/songwriter, so in a sense we wanted to bring it home for the last song. It's about the happiest homeless man I have ever seen.
We wanted to be completely organic with production of this track, so it was recorded live. Manny Sanchez used a special microphone that was a stereo mic set up within a detailed mold of a human head. I guess it was meant to pick up sound as our own ears do.
lyrics
“Days Like This” by Matthew Santos
You know you gotta see it/gotta see it to believe it.
There goes a man with no agenda to define him.
You know he’s got nothing/but he keeps on smiling,
loud as a flower.
You know you gotta see it/you gotta see it to believe it.
There goes a man with nothing on his mind.
Witness the clarity/the transparent rarity,
Free as a sparrow.
He said it’s days like this that hold me in bliss,
With the kiss of the sun on my brow.
And here I am in the here and now,
Where I’ll give you the shirt off my back.
Said I’ll give you the shirt right off my back.
You know you gotta see it/gotta see it to believe it,
There goes a man with nothing heavy on his heart.
and he don’t want nothing/just the air that he’s breathing,
light as a feather.
You know they wanna steal it/wanna steal his secret,
Cause they don’t believe they already got it there in their hearts.
But if they can’t steal it/gonna try and kill it, why?
He said it’s days like this that hold me in bliss,
With the kiss of the snow on my brow.
And here I am in the here and now,
Where I’ll give you the shirt off my back.
Said I’ll give you the shirt right off my back.
